Page 4 of 16 IMAGES OF GOD #4The Bible frequently uses the word 'holy' to describe God. All too often this word is understood to refer only to God's moral purity. It certainly includes the goodness and perfection of God, but it encompasses far more. To say that God is 'holy' is to say that he is totally unique. He is one-of-a-kind. He is totally other. He himself asks the question: 'To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?' (Isaiah 40:25). Incomparable. Unparalleled. Nothing is like him. No one is like him. Beside him all else falls away into insignificance. He alone is uncreated and uncaused. He alone is absolute and self-existent. Everything and everyone else is dependent and relative. To know this unique one-of-a-kind God is to cease from searching for the meaning and purpose of life, for in knowing him the ultimate questions are either answered or cease to be relevant questions. Scriptures: Isaiah 6:1-8; 40:12-31; 45:18-24. |
